EDP Renewables arrives at FES Iberia 2025 as a key player in Spain’s energy transition. Representing the company at the event will be Rocío Sicre, Managing Director – Spain at the company, whose presence underlines the strategic role that Spain plays in EDP’s clean energy roadmap. With a focus on decarbonisation, the company will showcase its progress in hydrogen development, hybrid energy projects, battery storage, and power purchase agreements (PPAs).

Spain stands as a priority market for EDP, where more than 2,000 professionals are developing innovative energy solutions. The company operates with 4,586 MW of installed capacity, 53,067 kilometres of electric networks, 1.4 million supply points, and delivers over 11 TWh of electricity and gas annually.

Green hydrogen: industrial reconversion and regional decarbonisation

Hydrogen production is a cornerstone of EDP’s strategy in Spain. In Asturias, the Asturias H2 Valley project is transforming the former coal-fired Aboño power plant into a renewable hydrogen hub with 150 MW of electrolysis capacity, aiming for a 99.98% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to baseline scenarios.

The initiative reuses existing infrastructure to cut capital investment costs, reduce environmental impact, and streamline administrative permitting. Coordinated by H2 Aboño S.A., it targets energy-intensive industries and has received €18 million from the Innovation Fund.

In southern Spain, the Green H2 Los Barrios project mirrors this model in Andalusia. Located at the former coal power station of Los Barrios, the new plant will feature 130 MW of electrolysis, also achieving a projected 99.98% emission reduction. The reuse of industrial assets again allows for efficient development and environmental optimisation.

Soto de Ribera: integrated hydrogen and large-scale storage

At the Soto de Ribera site, EDP is planning to develop a reference hub for renewable energy storage in central Asturias. Current developments include a mini-hydropower plant with hydroscrews, a photovoltaic solar park, and an energy storage system combining lithium-ion, RedOx, and second-life batteries.

In addition, EDP is exploring liquid air storage systems and will build a hydrogen refuelling station for sustainable transport. The site also envisions testing combined-cycle turbines to replace natural gas with renewable hydrogen, positioning Soto de Ribera as a critical energy transition node.

Córdoba: repurposing Puente Nuevo with solar and biomass energy

In Puente Nuevo (Córdoba), EDP plans to install 300 MW of ground-mounted solar PV and 50 MW of floating solar capacity on a nearby reservoir. The development will also include a biomass power plant, aimed at reactivating local industry and diversifying the energy mix.

These projects demonstrate EDP’s strategy to tailor energy solutions to each region, maximising existing infrastructure and promoting local economic revitalisation.

Renewable hybridisation: efficiency through co-located technologies

EDP is the first company in Spain to operate hybrid wind-solar parks, with a combined capacity of 103.35 MW. The facilities at Cruz de Hierro (Ávila, 28.75 MW), Villacastín (Segovia, 28.2 MW), and Castillo de Garcimuñoz (Cuenca, 46.4 MW) integrate photovoltaic systems into existing wind farms.

This hybridisation model increases energy output by up to 40%, leveraging existing grid connections while minimising environmental impact. Collectively, these three parks power 45,000 households and prevent over 70,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.

EDP also operates two hybrid parks in Portugal (63.2 MW) and one in Poland (124.5 MW), bringing its total hybrid installed capacity in Europe to 300 MW.

Global PPA leadership: 15 GW contracted worldwide

On the global stage, EDP has surpassed 15 GWp in signed PPAs, supplying long-term renewable energy to major international clients. In 2024 alone, the company signed agreements with 15 clients, increasing contracted capacity by 15% year-on-year.

More than 20% of these contracts are for data centres, addressing growing electricity demand from the tech sector. Notable deals include 200 MWp with Microsoft in Singapore, 44 MWp with Amazon in Japan, and 218 MW with a tech firm in Spain.

EDP has also signed multiple supply contracts across Italy, Germany, France, and the Netherlands, and holds 3.2 GW of capacity in PPAs for data centres alone, reinforcing its reliability as a clean energy provider.

Networking and Cooperation: Accelerators of the Transition

With more than 400 executives and participation from leading energy companies across Europe and Latin America, FES Iberia 2025 will once again serve as a key venue for building alliances.

The event will host representatives from top renewable companies such as EDP Renewables, Repsol, RWE, Galp, Jinko Solar, Grenergy, Cox Energy, Zelestra, Schletter, Sonnedix, Elmya, among others.

This major renewable gathering is known for its high-level networking environment, where new projects are launched to reinforce regional cooperation in clean energy.

🎟️ Tickets are already available on the official event website.
