The third edition of the Future Energy Summit (FES) Iberia 2025, scheduled for June 24 at the Colegio de Caminos, Auditorio Betancourt in Madrid, will serve as a key platform to analyze energy security strategies amid growing operational complexity and the rapid expansion of renewable energy.

Among the key participants are Joao Costeira, Executive Managing Director of Low Carbon Generation at Repsol; Rocío Sicre, General Director of EDP Renewables Spain; Pablo Fernández Vila, General Director of Energy Planning and Mines at the Xunta de Galicia; and Carlos Píñar Celestino, Managing Director of Elmya. They will offer insights from both the public and private sectors to support the development of a more robust energy architecture.

The event will bring together more than 400 executives from companies, utilities, technology providers, investment funds, and government institutions, offering a full day of technical panels, strategic sessions, and exclusive high-level networking spaces designed to facilitate partnerships and concrete agreements across the energy value chain.

Among the highlighted content blocks, there will be a dedicated panel on Southern Europe, where regulatory frameworks, investment strategies, and regional opportunities in Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Greece will be analyzed.

A special session focused on Latin America will also be held, featuring Guatemala’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Víctor Hugo Ventura, who will present the country’s flagship renewable energy tender, which is expected to mobilize more than $5 billion in generation and transmission investments.

One of the central themes of the summit will be the session titled “Energy Security and Renewables: A Forum to Analyze the Iberian Blackout,” where participants will explore the causes and consequences of the massive April 28 blackout, which affected Spain, Portugal, and southern France. The incident disconnected the Iberian system from the European grid, raising concerns about the stability of systems with high renewable penetration and underscoring the need for increased storage, backup capacity, and operational control.

Preliminary technical reports suggest the crisis resulted from a sequence of generation losses that the system failed to contain, raising important questions about the current infrastructure’s readiness for low-inertia scenarios, which are common during periods of high wind and solar output.

At FES Iberia 2025, experts will explore how to leverage storage technologies, digital grid management, frequency and voltage services, hybrid systems, and new market rules to secure energy supply in a rapidly evolving landscape.

Watch the full recap of FES Iberia 2024:

The blackout also exposed vulnerabilities in the regional market. Portugal’s temporary suspension of energy imports from Spain led to a system decoupling that pushed local prices to €47.92/MWh, while Spain averaged €10.24/MWh, even registering negative prices at times. This distortion affected the profitability of solar generators and highlighted the need for stronger interconnection and regional coordination.

Additionally, the summit will explore how to reduce overdependence on combined-cycle plants during unexpected nuclear shutdowns and evaluate the role of weather variability, operational algorithms, and demand flexibility in maintaining grid stability.

Beyond current challenges, FES Iberia 2025 further strengthens its profile as the leading forum in the energy sector. In an era of volatility, its ability to bring together decision-makers from across the ecosystem and promote realistic roadmaps makes it the go-to event to anticipate trends and design sustainable, secure, and competitive energy solutions for the region.
