The first Strategic Energy Corp event of the year was a two-part virtual session hosted by Mobility Portal Europe and Strategic Energy Europe. Strategic Energy Corp joined forces with Future Energy Summit (FES) to deliver this event, given that FES is the premier platform for renewable energy encounters in Spanish-speaking countries, providing forums that facilitate debate and networking among top global and regional companies to drive the energy transition.
It is worth noting that on June 24, the third edition of FES Iberia 2025 will take place at Colegio Caminos (Auditorio Betancourt, C. de Almagro, 42, Chamberí) in Madrid. (Relive the previous edition.) The meeting will feature companies such as Iberdrola, Nextracker, Engie, Grenergy, Statkraft, Acciona Energía, Red Eléctrica, and EDP Renewables, along with prominent representatives from Spain’s Autonomous Communities and Latin America. Key topics of discussion will include solar and wind energy, energy storage, green hydrogen, distributed generation, PPAs, auctions, and new projects.
Expansion in the Iberian Peninsula: Strategic Projects in Spain and Portugal
Since February 2025, Sonnedix has intensified its efforts in the Iberian Peninsula with a strategic focus on energy storage and hybrid solutions. The company is currently developing a 1 GW battery hybridisation project, with land connections secured and administrative permits in progress. These projects are moving forward with ongoing purchase orders and signed EPC agreements.
In Portugal, Sonnedix has started construction on its largest solar project in Europe, with a capacity of 150 megawatts (MW) in Douro, in the Tarouca municipality. This project, expected to be operational by the end of March, is part of a 150 MW BTR in a three-site cluster, consolidating an operational capacity of over 1.2 GW in Spain and Portugal.
Nester emphasised during the virtual event organised by Strategic Energy Corp that “the stability of revenue models for storage projects will be crucial to achieving our 2025 objectives”. The company maintains a proactive approach to adapting to market challenges to continue leading the growth of renewable energy in Iberia.
Energy Storage and Hybrid Solutions: Leading Innovation in Renewables
Sonnedix’s energy storage strategy is designed to maximise profitability through multiple potential revenue streams. The company has developed a comprehensive battery operation strategy that considers all available revenue models, optimising energy management and balancing the power grid.
During her participation in the virtual event, Nester highlighted the importance of hybrid solutions in their expansion strategy: “Battery storage and hybrid solutions are essential for integrating renewable energy and ensuring grid stability. We are committed to leading this transition in the Iberian Peninsula”.
In this context, Sonnedix is positioning itself as a leader in battery hybridisation and energy storage in Europe, leveraging its strong infrastructure in Spain and Portugal to develop scalable and sustainable projects.
Critical Challenges and Success Factors: The Roadmap to 2025
The progress of Sonnedix’s projects will depend on critical factors influencing the success of its expansion in Iberia. These include:
- Successful completion of administrative permitting processes, which remain one of the major obstacles to executing its storage projects.
- Effective implementation of EPC agreements, ensuring on-time delivery and construction quality.
- Stability of revenue models for storage, which will determine the financial viability of its projects.
“The stability of revenue models is one of the most critical factors for the success of our projects in Iberia,” Nester asserted during the virtual event organised by Strategic Energy Corp. “We are working closely with regulators and key market players to ensure a stable and favourable environment”.
Projections and Goals for 2025: Consolidation in the Iberian Market
Looking ahead, Sonnedix has ambitious plans for 2025 in the energy storage and hybrid solutions market. The company will continue investing in technological innovation and operational optimisation, with the goal of exceeding 1.2 GW in operation in Spain and Portugal.
Nester reaffirms Sonnedix’s commitment to the region’s energy transition: “Our focus on energy storage and hybrid solutions is key to leading the energy transition in the Iberian Peninsula. We will continue to innovate and adapt to market challenges”.
With a clear strategy and a strong focus on innovation, Sonnedix is poised to drive the growth of renewable energy in Iberia while strengthening its position as a key player in Europe’s energy storage and hybrid solutions market. Its comprehensive approach integrates technological advancements, operational expansion, and adaptability to regulatory challenges. With an ambitious 2025 plan, the company reaffirms its commitment to the energy transition in Spain and Portugal, solidifying its leadership in the renewable energy sector.
