€25 million in aid granted to electro-intensive industries to promote renewable energy

The Ministry of Industry published the provisional resolution for grants to companies such as Repsol Petróleo, Smurfit Kappa Navarra, and Votorantim Cementos, compensating their high energy consumption and promoting the use of renewable energy in 2024.

On October 9, 2024, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism of Spain (MINTUR) published the provisional resolution proposal for the grant call aimed at electro-intensive consumers.

This initiative, under Royal Decree 1106/2020, aims to compensate industries with high energy consumption for the costs associated with financing renewable energy, high-efficiency cogeneration, and additional tariffs in non-peninsular territories.

The initiative allocates a total of €25,468,379.72, distributed among various industries consuming large amounts of electricity, such as those related to cement, paper, steel, and chemicals.

These grants are intended to compensate for the charges related to financing renewable energy and high-efficiency cogeneration, as well as the additional financing in non-peninsular territories, in line with Royal Decree 1106/2020.

Among the beneficiaries are companies from the chemical, materials, and food sectors, such as Repsol Petróleo, S.A., which will receive €153,284.15 for its Puertollano plant, and Smurfit Kappa Navarra S.A., which will receive €128,641.15.

Other significant companies include Votorantim Cementos España, S.A., with a proposed grant of €86,121.96 for its Alconera factory, and Bioetanol Galicia, S.A., which will receive €45,168.58.

ATALAYA RIO TINTO MINERA S.L. is the largest beneficiary, with a proposed grant of €246,857.55.
