Solar photovoltaics in Spain has already surpassed its production for the entire year of 2023.

According to data from Red Eléctrica, generation with this technology reached 37,551 GWh on October 5, 2024, surpassing its total production for all of 2023, which was 37,472 GWh.

The GWh of solar photovoltaic energy produced in Spain surpassed those registered throughout the entire year of 2023 on October 5, 2024, according to data from Red Eléctrica. On that date, the renewable technology reached 37,551 GWh, a figure that exceeds the 37,472 GWh recorded last year, which marked a historic high.

The boost in solar photovoltaic production from January to October 5 has resulted in a 19% increase compared to the same period last year. According to the available data, solar photovoltaics, with 18.3% of the total, is the third-largest source of electricity in Spain since January, in a mix led by wind energy, which accounts for 22.4% of the total.

With this contribution, 57.5% of the energy produced in Spain from January until last Saturday is of renewable origin, the highest share ever recorded.

With longer daylight hours, the summer months are when the contribution of photovoltaic energy to the progress of the ecological transition is most noticeable. In fact, this technology has led the monthly production mix in the country for four consecutive months this year (from May to August).

Additionally, this year, several daily and monthly production records have been broken with this technology. In July, with 5,817 GWh, it was the month with the largest contribution from this technology since records began. Meanwhile, on July 12, the highest daily production was reached, with 212 GWh.

An increasingly renewable generation park

This positive trend is primarily due to favorable weather conditions and the installed photovoltaic power in Spain, which allows the country to better take advantage of solar radiation, an abundant resource.

Currently, solar photovoltaics is the second-largest technology in the generation park, with 28,691 MW installed, only surpassed by wind energy with 31,617 MW. Thanks to the growth of both, more than 63% of Spain’s generation park is made up of renewable technologies.
