ENGIE has acquired two large-scale battery energy storage projects in Andalusia from Rolwind Renovables, a Córdoba-based Spanish developer.
The projects—Palmosilla (200 MW / 800 MWh in Tarifa, Cádiz) and Cerrillo (78 MW / 312 MWh in Álora, Málaga)—represent a combined capacity of 278 MW / 1,112 MWh, making them currently the largest independent energy storage developments in Spain.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027, and these projects will serve as a foundation for a new generation of storage assets designed to support the power grid, enhance system stability and enable greater integration of renewable energy into the energy system.
Beyond their scale, both projects—originally initiated by the Andalusian company Rolwind in 2022—will include synchronous condensers, a critical technology for providing inertia to the system and improving the stability, security and flexibility of the Spanish electricity grid.
Together, Palmosilla and Cerrillo represent an investment of more than €240 million between 2026 and 2028, and have secured a combined €70 million grant from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
Construction is expected to start in the first half of 2027, with commissioning scheduled throughout 2028. In this way, the company contributes to accelerating Spain’s energy transition through mature technologies that have a direct impact on the security of supply.
Loreto Ordóñez, CEO of ENGIE Spain, stated: “The acquisition of these two storage projects once again demonstrates our strong commitment to renewable energy and the Iberian market. It also allows us to strengthen our position in the storage segment, a key pillar in consolidating the energy transition.”
This transaction aligns with ENGIE’s strategic objective of reaching 95 GW of installed renewable energy and storage capacity globally by 2030, integrating all its capabilities to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.
Manuel Nevado, CEO of Rolwind Renovables, highlighted: “Since 2022, Rolwind has been a pioneer in Spain in developing storage projects with synchronous compensation. Today, the characteristics of our electricity system have confirmed the strategic relevance of this type of solution, due to the flexibility, reliability and stability provided by projects such as Palmosilla and Cerrillo.”
A strong and growing presence in Andalusia
Currently, ENGIE Spain manages 1.7 GW of renewable capacity, has 90 MW under construction, and holds a development pipeline of 3.5 GW.
The acquisition of the Tarifa and Álora projects adds to other major milestones for the company in Andalusia, such as the commissioning of the Cerro Cabello and El Patrón wind farms in Los Barrios (Cádiz), as well as the operation of four solar PV plants forming the Séneca and Meridion complexes, located in the provinces of Seville and Córdoba.
By integrating large-scale energy storage solutions, ENGIE strengthens its ability to support Spain’s energy transition, ensuring greater security of supply and enabling the efficient integration of variable renewable energy into the power system.
