ZOOZ Power is a company dedicated to the development, manufacturing, and commercialization of energy enhancement systems. It is at the forefront of ultra-fast charging for electric vehicles (EVs) through innovative technology that allows the integration of renewable energy and efficient management of the electric grid.

With a strong presence in key markets like Israel and Germany, the company seeks to consolidate its position in North America, Spain, and other Southern European countries.  Kevin Pugh, VP of Sales in Europe, highlights: “The demand for our solutions comes from the limited grid capacity, the acceleration of EV adoption, and the need for cost-effective solutions for charging point operators.”

“With more than 40 employees and 26 approved patents, ZOOZ Power is focused on providing solutions for the challenge of the growing demand for ultra-fast EV charging and the limitations of current electrical infrastructure to support these higher energy requirements,” adds Pugh in an interview with Energía Estratégica España.

ZOOZTER-100 Technology and Integration with Renewable Energy

ZOOZ Power’s ZOOZTER-100 system is the cornerstone of its strategy. Designed to overcome infrastructure limitations in areas with low grid capacity, the technology allows ultra-fast charging without the need for costly grid upgrades.

“The ZOOZTER-100 is a kinetic enhancement system that enables ultra-fast, high-power charging for electric vehicles. It stores energy during low-demand periods, converts it into kinetic energy, and then returns it to the grid when needed,” explains Pugh.

With this technology, the need for immediate grid upgrades is avoided, available energy is used more efficiently, and ultra-fast charging is enabled when required, as explained by the ZOOZ Power representative.

Another key aspect of the system is that it facilitates the integration of renewable sources into the grid, such as solar and wind, by using excess energy to efficiently power its charging systems.

“Our technology is compatible with on-site electricity generation from renewable energy sources like wind and solar. The ZOOZTER-100 system is mainly designed for grid connection, but it can operate with any type of grid source if there is enough energy for DC charging,” says Pugh.

He adds: “If fed from a renewable energy source, the ZOOZTER-100 acts as a kinetic enhancer that temporarily supplements the grid energy with bursts of kinetic energy stored, generated from those renewable energy sources.”

Additionally, the ZOOZ Power representative confirms that the technology could be installed near a solar or wind park and powered by them as part of the infrastructure. In terms of storage, the flywheel acts as a “kinetic enhancer” that temporarily supplements grid energy with bursts of stored kinetic energy. Therefore, in most cases, it is used instead of other energy storage solutions like batteries.

Technical Details

As Pugh explains, the difference between the ZOOZTER-100 and a battery lies in its mechanism based on kinetic energy. It is a system that uses a high-speed steel flywheel spinning at 17,000 rpm within a sealed vacuum chamber.

This innovative design allows for up to 200,000 charge and discharge cycles, a lifespan of 15 years, and a fast and consistent response that, according to Pugh, “not only prolongs the system’s life but also decreases operating costs and reduces environmental impact compared to traditional chemical batteries.”

“During charging, the spinning flywheel drives a generator to supplement grid energy, enabling fast DC charging rates that exceed the grid’s capacity on its own. The ZOOZTER-100 connects to the grid using a standard 3-phase connection, making it a ‘plug-and-play’ solution even in remote areas with underdeveloped grid infrastructure,” he indicates.
