Green hydrogen production has successfully begun at Viscofan’s industrial facilities in Cáseda, Navarra (northern Spain). The initiative represents a pioneering step in the energy transition of the region’s industrial sector and is part of the H2OP project, developed by a consortium comprising Viscofan, Nordex Electrolyzers, the Navarre Association of Industry (AIN), and startup URAPHEX.

The project aligns with the Government of Navarra’s strategy to position green hydrogen as a key energy vector for industrial decarbonization and competitiveness.

Thanks to the joint efforts of the four partners, the consortium installed and commissioned a 500 kW electrolyzer, designed, manufactured, and assembled entirely in Spain by Nordex Electrolyzers, together with a water treatment and recovery plant. Integration with Viscofan’s boiler system was completed in a record time of just two months.

The system enables Viscofan to produce a continuous flow of 100 Nm³ per hour of renewable hydrogen, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 480 metric tons per year.

Íñigo Martínez, CEO of Viscofan Spain, said the collaborative effort made it possible to produce green hydrogen on site for use in industrial boilers, contributing to the future development of this sustainable energy vector and positioning Navarra as a reference for energy innovation and circularity.

Luis Solla, CEO of Nordex Electrolyzers, highlighted the rapid integration of the electrolyzer into the boiler feed system and the strong coordination among project partners, describing H2OP as a concrete step toward industrial decarbonization through green hydrogen.

From the regional government, Mikel Irujo Amezaga, Navarra’s Minister for Industry and Business Digital and Ecological Transition and president of the public development company SODENA, described the project as a key industrial milestone for the region, reinforcing Navarra’s leadership in energy sovereignty and decarbonization at both national and European levels.

He also noted that the project received financial support from SODENA, which participates as a shareholder in Nordex Electrolyzers.

Javier López, CEO of URAPHEX, emphasized that the start-up of green hydrogen production at the Cáseda plant demonstrates the value of collaboration, adding that the company’s water management and circularity technology optimizes water use and recovery, strengthening the sustainability of the overall process.

From AIN, its Director General Ana Ursúa underlined that Navarra has a strong industrial ecosystem capable of leading the transition toward clean energy, stressing that collaboration between companies, technology centers, and public authorities is essential to accelerate industrial decarbonization.

The H2OP project forms part of the 2024–2027 strategic R&D funding program promoted by Navarra’s Department of Industry and Business Digital and Ecological Transition under Challenge 2 (AERO VIII), focused on the green energy industry. The initiative has received €838,428.98 in funding from the Government of Navarra and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Overall, the project further consolidates Navarra’s position as a reference in energy innovation, highlighting the role of public-private collaboration in advancing toward a more sustainable industrial model.
