First and foremost, we must exercise prudence and allow REE’s technicians to work on understanding what happened and what measures the grid should adopt to prevent future incidents. We must thank REE for the swift restoration of the system.
Photovoltaic technology is a mature technology capable of providing everything the grid requires for its stability and complies with all technical requirements set by the electricity system operator (REE) and regulations (the grid connection code and operating procedures). The energy injected into the grid was scheduled the day before, and yesterday it was strictly adhering to the planned schedule. Photovoltaic plants did not voluntarily disconnect; they were disconnected from the grid.
Photovoltaic technology, as one of the main new technologies in the system, has taken on its responsibilities and continues to offer its technology under the best conditions. The system with renewables is stable. There have been instances when renewables supplied a greater amount of energy to the system than yesterday without any issues. There are 100% photovoltaic systems with batteries that are perfectly stable. An example of this is that yesterday, standalone photovoltaic self-consumption systems with batteries, which were properly reconfigured (in “island mode”, disconnected from the grid), operated without problems.
The photovoltaic sector is well-positioned to continue contributing to meeting its responsibility to achieve the European Union’s objectives and the PNIEC, ensuring affordable, clean, and secure energy while guaranteeing energy independence, in line with EU goals. Several elements will support the achievement of these objectives, such as storage, the streamlining of procedures for hybrid photovoltaic and storage installations, and the approval of operating procedure 7.4, which would allow renewables to help control grid voltage and reactive current, as well as an EU storage action plan as part of a new European flexibility package.
The promotion of renewable energies is contributing to the reindustrialisation of Europe and Spain through the competitive advantage it provides to our industry, as well as to achieving decarbonisation goals in the fight against climate change.
We invite reflection on the importance of continuing to strengthen renewable infrastructure and its integration into the grid to ensure a sustainable energy future. What measures do you believe could accelerate this transition?
