The Future Energy Summit (FES) Iberia Renewables & Storage will take place this Thursday, 12 February, in Madrid, positioning itself as one of Spain’s most influential gatherings for the renewable energy and energy storage sector.

With attendance nearing full capacity and more than 50 confirmed speakers, the event will combine high-level technical debate with strategic policy discussions aimed at accelerating Spain’s energy transition and strengthening grid integration of variable renewables such as solar PV and wind power.

The institutional opening will feature senior representatives from Spain’s national and regional governments, including Carmen López Ocón, Director of Renewable Energy and Electricity Markets at the Instituto para la Diversificación y Ahorro de la Energía (IDAE), Spain’s national energy agency, and Fátima García Señán, Deputy Director-General for Storage and Flexibility at the Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico (MITECO), the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge.

Both officials are expected to provide a structural outlook on the deployment of clean technologies, the integration of battery energy storage systems (BESS), and the regulatory challenges facing Spain’s power system planning amid the rapid expansion of renewable energy capacity.

From the private sector, top executives from leading energy companies operating in Spain and across Europe will address new business models, long-term investment in renewables, and the sustainability of the electricity system.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Julio Castro, CEO of Iberdrola Renovables

  • Rocío Sicre, Managing Director of EDP Renewables Spain

  • Rafael Esteban, Global Chief Business Development Officer at Acciona Energía

  • Miguel Sánchez Praena, CEO of Altano Energy

  • Fernando Cremades, Global Head of Growth at Galp

Additional participation is confirmed from companies such as Enagás, Lightsource bp, Recurrent Energy, Sonnedix, Ignis Energía, Redeia, Verbund Green Power Iberia and others, reflecting a diverse and highly specialised corporate agenda across solar PV, wind power, grid infrastructure and green hydrogen.

Energy storage will be one of the core pillars of the summit, with participation from Huawei Digital Power, Zelestra, Jinko ESS and Tera Batteries, alongside sector associations including ASEALEN (Spain’s energy storage association) and UNEF (the Spanish solar PV association).

The technical programme will also address:

  • Distributed generation and self-consumption (autoconsumo)

  • Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), long-term electricity supply contracts

  • Digitalisation and smart energy management

  • Flexibility markets and grid services

These topics are increasingly critical as Spain moves towards higher penetration of intermittent renewable energy.

The prominence of storage at FES Iberia reflects a rapidly evolving national landscape.

In just three weeks, Spain processed more than 570 MW of BESS capacity for hybridisation with renewable projects, alongside more than 1.6 GW of new renewable capacity, with companies such as Iberdrola, Galp and Forestalia leading developments.

This trend highlights the urgent need for flexible solutions capable of supporting large-scale integration of solar PV and wind power.

Recent storage and renewables milestones in Spain

Indicator Latest Figures
BESS capacity processed (3 weeks) 570+ MW
Renewable capacity processed 1,600+ MW
FEDER storage funding (latest call) 9.4 GWh
Number of storage projects awarded 126
New storage access requests received by REE 37+ GW

At the regional level, Andalusia recently approved Law 4/2025, introducing a fast-track procedure for hybrid storage projects that do not require environmental impact assessment. The reform is expected to accelerate more than 800 MW currently under development, supported by significant EU FEDER funds for over 30 projects.

Nationally, Spain is also awaiting final approval from the European Commission to launch its first capacity market mechanism, a key instrument to ensure system firmness and long-term adequacy as renewable penetration increases.

Meanwhile, Spain’s transmission system operator, Red Eléctrica de España, has received more than 37 GW in new storage connection requests and recently published available grid nodes for demand access tenders, opening concrete opportunities for new investment.

The event will also feature one of the broadest regional government representations seen at an energy conference in Spain, including senior officials from Galicia, Andalusia, the Canary Islands and Castilla y León.

The regional panel aims to align strategies across different levels of government and address permitting bottlenecks, one of the most frequently cited barriers by renewable energy and storage developers.

With more than 400 attendees expected and live streaming via the FES YouTube channel, FES Iberia will extend its reach to executives, policymakers and technical experts across the Iberian and Latin American energy markets.

Through real-time coverage, exclusive interviews and high-level networking, the summit is set to consolidate its role as a strategic platform for shaping Spain’s next phase of renewable energy expansion, energy storage deployment and power system electrification.
