On 22 May, the second day of the Storage, Renewable and Electric Vehicles Integration Forum – Second Edition begins, with an agenda dedicated exclusively to electric mobility across the European continent. Following an opening day focused on storage, grid integration, and renewable energy, the forum continues with key discussions on the challenges and opportunities of zero-emission transport in Europe.

Organised by Strategic Energy Europe and Mobility Portal Europe, the event opened with an exclusive keynote interview with Norela Constantinescu, Director of the Innovation and Technology Centre at IRENA, who provided a global overview of renewable energy deployment. “In 2024, 585 GW of renewable capacity was deployed worldwide, with 75% of that coming from solar PV,” states the executive. She highlighted that 65% of this expansion occurred in China, followed by 15% in Europe and 7% in the United States.

Regarding the levelised cost of electricity (LCOE), Constantinescu projects a continued but slower decline for both solar and wind power.Although the drop will not be as steep as in the past decade, technological improvements will continue to drive competitiveness,” she explains. Constantinescu also emphasised the role of digitalisation in managing complex power systems with high levels of renewable integration.

After the institutional opening, the first panel focused on the present and future of renewable energy. Arthur Daemers, Senior Policy Advisor at SolarPower Europe, reported that the EU added 65 GW of new solar capacity in 2024, reaching a cumulative total of 338 GW, though he warned of ongoing structural barriers that may hinder further expansion.

Jacopo Tosoni, Head of Policy at EASE, underlined that Europe installed 22 GWh of new energy storage capacity in 2024, with expectations to reach 400 GWh by 2029. “2026 could be the breakthrough year for large-scale energy storage in Europe,” he suggests, while calling for a clear EU-level roadmap.

Daniel Fraile, Chief Policy Officer at Hydrogen Europe, emphasised that more robust regulatory frameworks are still needed to boost the hydrogen sector. “Achieving cost parity with fossil fuels before 2030 is possible, but it will depend on the implementation of the Net Zero Industry Act,” he says.

Cristina Caballero, Senior Regulatory Expert at AELEC, discussed Spain’s situation and the broader European context. Following the recent Iberian blackout, she raised concerns about supply security and called for strengthened interconnections across the continent.

The second round of the panel addressed Europe’s industrial competitiveness. Arthur Daemers argued that the Net Zero Industry Act could be instrumental in strengthening Europe’s solar value chain. Meanwhile, Daniel Fraile stated that accelerating investment in electrolyser manufacturing and establishing common standards will be critical for Europe to remain competitive in the global hydrogen market.

The forum also featured participation from key companies such as GCL System Integration, SMA Solar, Suntech, Solplanet, Diprem Global, Flexgen, Isemaren, AleaSoft, Agere Energy, 360Energy, Sólida and Licencia Social Energy. These firms offered valuable insights on innovation, efficiency, digitalisation, and emerging business models in the clean energy sector.

The second day of the forum, dedicated to electric mobility, will focus on transport electrification, charging infrastructure, and the convergence between electric vehicles, storage, and smart grids. The panel titled “The pulse of eMobility: industry experts speak” will bring together key industry voices to explore the future of sustainable transport in Europe.

The event continues in virtual format via StrategicEnergy.eu and on the portal’s YouTube and social media channels. Comprehensive coverage will follow with new articles, interviews and analysis that delve deeper into each topic addressed throughout the forum.
