Spain processes 1.7 GW of renewables in June: IGNIS and Verbund take the lead

The deployment of renewable energy in Spain took a major step forward this week with the publication of new administrative resolutions in the Boletín Oficial del Estado (BOE), enabling numerous projects to move towards the ready-to-build stage.

As reported by Strategic Energy Europe, these initiatives collectively amount to over 1,700 MW of capacity, mostly solar, with a growing focus on hybrid and storage projects.

IGNIS Renovables tops the list of developers with five projects approved in the Community of Madrid

These include Popa Solar (61.12 MW), Maladeta Solar (162.56 MW) and Collarada Solar (50.24 MW), the latter two located in the municipalities of Santorcaz and Anchuelo

Additionally, the Pañol Solar park in Guadalajara is progressing with 92.57 MW, while Iberdrola Renovables has secured administrative authorisation to hybridise its existing Morón de Almazán wind farm in Soria with a 51.315 MW solar plant.

Another key player is Verbund AG, which received seven authorisations for photovoltaic projects in Andalusia

In the province of Málaga, the following projects have been approved: Orla Solar I (69.14 MW), Orla Solar II (49.11 MW), Natera Solar (39.075 MW), PFV Reclamo Solar (49.105 MW), PFV Rehala Solar (156.39 MW), and in Granada, Baluma Solar (58.14 MW). These resolutions focus on public utility declarations, a crucial step toward construction.

Meanwhile, Engie España obtained a favourable environmental impact statement for the Saurus project, a 137.03 MWn solar installation in Teruel, which will be hybridised with the Castelnou combined cycle thermal power plant.

This initiative stands out as a benchmark for energy reconversion in areas with pre-existing thermal infrastructure.

Also noteworthy are developments promoted by OPDEnergy, which received the public utility declaration for the Las Coronas plant (50.1 MW) in Valladolid, and by TotalEnergies, which is advancing with Quilla Solar (51.04 MW) in the Community of Madrid, with infrastructure spanning six municipalities: Nuevo Baztán, Valverde de Alcalá, Arganda del Rey, Campo Real, Loeches, and Pozuelo del Rey.

Elawan Energy is driving forward two hybrid wind projects in Cuenca, each of 21.6 MW, to be integrated with existing solar facilities. The Belinchón I Hybrid and Belinchón II Hybrid modules received favourable environmental impact reports, enabling further regulatory progress.

X-Elio also received a positive environmental opinion for modifications to its Lorca Solar project in Murcia.

In Castilla y León, AQ Capital is promoting the Villameca Solar 1-2 (92.3 MW) and Villameca Solar 3 (51.58 MW) projects in the municipalities of Quintana del Castillo and Villamejil (León). The BOE published notices for the initial land occupation proceedings, a prerequisite for construction.

Lastly, Aena SME received authorisation to expand its photovoltaic generation infrastructure at Madrid-Barajas Airport via the PSF MAD 120 Substation, located in Alcobendas.

This set of resolutions reflects not only the dynamism of Spain’s renewable energy sector, but also the geographical and technological diversification of its energy transition.

The Communities of Madrid, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia, Aragón, and Murcia are home to the week’s most prominent developments.
