Three energy-sector companies —Iberdrola, Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure, and Rolwind Renovables— have secured more than 51% of the nearly 10 GWh of energy storage capacity awarded by Spain’s Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) in the final resolution of the FEDER funding programme. The call, supported by more than €827 million, allocates resources to 133 projects with a combined 2,400 MW of installed power.
The main awardee is Iberdrola, with 12 projects totalling 2,333.7 MWh, equivalent to 24.1% of Spain’s awarded capacity. The utility combines battery storage, pumped hydro, and thermal storage technologies, including 990 MWh from reversible pumped hydro alone, positioning the company as a cross-technology storage leader in Spain.
Among its initiatives are BAT Majada Alta, BAT San Antonio, BAT Tagus III and IV, and three large developments in Galicia: BAT Dólar 1, BAT Pedregal Tremuzo and BAT Muras. Iberdrola also features relevant projects such as BESS Hybridisation PV Virgen de Areños III in Castilla y León and other installations in Extremadura.
Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure Ltd, with 8 projects and a total of 1,517 MWh awarded, consolidates its position as the second-largest operator, securing a 15.3% share. Some of its key initiatives include Solacor TES1, TES2, ST1 and ST2, located mainly in Andalucía.
For its part, Rolwind Renovables, with only two projects, concentrates 1,225 MWh, representing 12.3% of the total awarded nationwide. This share is achieved thanks to the scale of its systems: ST Palmosilla, with 885.3 MWh, and ST Cerrillo, with 340.0 MWh. The former stands among the largest battery-based storage systems planned for the Spanish grid.
Notable awardees beyond the top three
Naturgy stands out as one of the companies with the broadest regional presence, securing 7 projects in areas such as the Canary Islands and Murcia, totalling 359.3 MWh, or 3.6% of the awarded capacity. The projects include facilities such as HIB BESS Fuerteventura, San Blas, Jumilla and Monte Redondo.
Ecoener receives 32 MWh across 4 projects, all located in the Canary Islands, reinforcing its regional footprint. Aquila Clean Energy reaches 71.6 MWh with projects such as Bellissens 4 and 5, located in Catalonia.
Other notable awardees include:
-
Abengoa: 310 MWh (TES1) and 285 MWh (TES2)
-
Benbros (Galicia): 225.8 MWh
-
Prisca Solar and Celso Solar: 168 MWh each (Andalucía)
-
Sermatec Energy: 110.3 MWh
-
Viridi RE Group: 88.4 MWh
-
Africana Energía: 40.0 MWh
Companies such as Greenalia, Saeta Yield, Ecoactivos, Helios, Our New Energy, CTG Europe, Sanitas, Ignis, Intermalta, EnergyNest Iberia, and several industrial SMEs complete the landscape with projects ranging from 13 to 225 MWh.
Regional distribution: Andalucía leads the deployment
Andalucía is the main recipient of funding, with 32 projects totalling 3,529 MWh of capacity and €351.3 million in public support. The region not only leads in volume but also hosts thermal and industrial storage systems, including developments from Aceites del Sur – Coosur, Actividades Oleícolas, Rpow Consulting, and Abengoa. Andalucía is emerging as a key hub for technological diversification in energy storage.
In second place, Galicia adds 1,117 MWh across 12 projects, including allocations to Iberdrola, Benbros, Greenalia and Ecoener. Castilla-La Mancha follows with 1,012 MWh in 11 projects, while Castilla y León rounds out the top four with 854 MWh, after adding four additional projects in the final stage.
Extremadura, the Canary Islands, Catalonia and Murcia also receive significant allocations. Extremadura stands out for Iberdrola’s developments such as BAT Tagus III and IV. In the Canary Islands, Naturgy and Ecoener lead deployment, while in Catalonia, Aquila Clean Energy helps strengthen the regional storage pipeline.
Funding: More than €827 million at stake, with grants exceeding €20 million per project
The FEDER programme allocates €827 million in non-repayable public grants —an unprecedented boost for Spain’s energy storage sector.
Although funding is distributed across 133 awarded initiatives, it shows a high level of concentration:
-
More than 50 projects receive over €5 million each
-
Large-scale initiatives from Iberdrola, Atlantica and Rolwind obtain over €20 million per project
For example, Iberdrola’s BAT Majada Alta and BAT San Antonio, as well as TES 1 and TES 2 from Atlantica and Abengoa, respectively, rank among the most highly funded projects.
Average support per project reaches around €6.2 million, but in regions with large allocations—Andalucía, Galicia and Castilla-La Mancha—the figures are considerably higher. In Andalucía alone, funding totals €351.3 million, representing more than 42% of all national allocations.
Technology and value chain
Most awarded initiatives are BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems), though thermal storage, pumped-hydro systems, and industrial solutions are also represented. Only 10 projects reach 3.4 points, and another 10 reach 4.2 points in the industrial value-chain assessment, highlighting the remaining challenge of strengthening Spain’s domestic storage ecosystem.
The deadline for project execution is 30 September 2029, including possible extensions. This deployment horizon places Spain at a decisive stage for consolidating its energy transition, with unprecedented levels of grid-scale storage integration.
