Qualitas Energy, a global investment and management platform in renewable energy, has announced the acquisition of four wind farms in Bavaria, Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. These projects currently have a combined installed capacity of 10 MW, but through repowering, they will be upgraded to 34 MW.
This expansion will generate clean energy for over 22,000 households, optimising land use and maximising wind turbine efficiency.
“With this acquisition, we are expanding our wind energy project pipeline and reinforcing our commitment to delivering innovative energy solutions in collaboration with local communities,” explains Johannes Overbeck, Co-CEO of Qualitas Energy Deutschland GmbH.
The role of repowering in energy transition
Repowering has become a key strategy for Europe’s energy transition. It involves replacing older wind turbines with more efficient modern technology, enhancing energy production without the need for new development sites.
In Germany, wind farm modernisation is essential to achieving decarbonisation and energy security goals. The four newly acquired projects add to another recent initiative by Qualitas Energy: the purchase of a 32-turbine wind farm on the German North Sea coast, which will reach 21.6 MW once repowered.
“By modernising older wind farms, we not only enhance energy efficiency but also contribute to long-term energy security and a sustainable energy supply for future generations,” Overbeck highlights.
Investment and expansion strategy in Germany
This acquisition marks a significant step in Qualitas Energy’s German investment strategy, following a series of recent wind energy acquisitions and development projects. It is also the first major transaction under the leadership of Clemens Susen, newly appointed Head of Investment at Qualitas Energy Deutschland GmbH.
“We acquire projects and wind energy pipelines at all stages of development and are committed to their implementation, ensuring that the interests of local stakeholders and development partners are safeguarded,” states Susen.
The company employs 250 professionals across six strategic offices in Germany: Berlin, Hamburg, Wiesbaden, Trier, Cologne, and Stuttgart. Its German operations are part of a broader global expansion, with a portfolio spanning Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, Chile, and the United States, encompassing 11 GW of operational and developing assets.
Qualitas Energy’s impact on global energy transition
Since its foundation in 2006, Qualitas Energy has allocated more than €12 billion to energy transition initiatives, managing a diverse portfolio that includes:
- 7 GWp of solar photovoltaic energy
- 4 GW of wind energy
- 242 MW of concentrated solar power (CSP)
- 60 MW of hydroelectric power
- 6 MW of battery storage
- 1.8 TWh of biomethane
Through these investments, the company has generated enough renewable energy to power 1.54 million homes and has successfully avoided 1.32 million metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions since 2021.
The future of Germany’s wind energy sector
Germany has set a target to achieve 80% renewable energy generation by 2030, with wind energy playing a crucial role. The country currently has 65 GW of installed wind power, a figure expected to surpass 100 GW in the next decade.
To reach these ambitious goals, the German government has introduced measures to accelerate permitting processes, facilitate repowering, and encourage private investment. Companies like Qualitas Energy are instrumental in this transition, ensuring that the modernisation of existing wind farms continues to drive the country’s clean energy transition.
“The development of advanced wind energy projects is essential to achieving climate targets and ensuring Europe’s energy independence,” concludes Overbeck.
Through this acquisition and its commitment to repowering, Qualitas Energy reaffirms its leadership in the wind energy sector, consolidating its role in Germany’s decarbonisation and long-term energy strategy.
