New Investments in Renewables, Storage, and Digitalization: Iberdrola Arrives at FES Iberia 2025 with a Consolidated Roadmap

The rollout of new solar plants, offshore wind farms, and hybrid projects across Europe—along with recent milestones such as Spain’s first industrial microgrid—solidifies Iberdrola’s position at the heart of the energy transition. This strategy will be central to the presentation by Julio Castro, CEO of Iberdrola Spain, at FES Iberia 2025, taking place on June 24 in Madrid, with over 400 leaders from the energy sector in attendance.

With new developments in solar, offshore wind, self-consumption, digitalization, and smart grids, Iberdrola is strengthening its role as a key player in Europe’s energy transition.

This integrative vision will be presented at Future Energy Summit (FES) Iberia 2025 on June 24, where Julio Castro, the CEO of Iberdrola Sustainable Energy Spain, will participate as a speaker alongside industry leaders at a meeting that will bring together more than 400 executives, regulatory authorities, and representatives of key companies in the energy ecosystem.

🎟️ Tickets are already available on the event’s official website.

In Spain, the company is developing one of the country’s largest photovoltaic plants linked to the tech sector: a 212 MW solar facility in Ciudad Rodrigo (Salamanca), set to supply clean energy to Amazon. With an investment of €200 million, the plant will become operational in 2025 and will be one of Amazon’s key solar projects in Spain.

One of the most recent milestones in the country is the installation of Spain’s first industrial microgrid at Schneider Electric’s plant in Barcelona. This hybrid system includes 990 solar panels capable of generating 670 MWh annually—covering 10% of the factory’s total consumption. It also features five EV charging points and 216 kWh of battery storage.

Iberdrola was responsible for installing the system, and the two companies have signed a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The microgrid reduces reliance on the main grid and enhances industrial power resilience—a scalable solution in the context of industrial electrification.

As part of its long-term contracts strategy, Iberdrola has also signed a PPA with Tubos Reunidos Group for the supply of 120 GWh of renewable energy over 10 years. This energy will come from 10 MW of Iberdrola’s solar portfolio and will supply the company’s industrial centers in Álava and Bizkaia.

Renewable Push: Major Strategic Projects in Europe

In the UK, Scottish Power, part of the Iberdrola Group, is advancing the construction of East Anglia 3—the company’s largest offshore wind farm to date, with a capacity of 1,400 MW. As part of the larger East Anglia Hub, the complex will exceed 3,000 MW once completed, with a total investment of over €10 billion and the ability to power more than 1.3 million homes.

In Portugal, Iberdrola and Amazon have signed their first energy agreement to develop the Tâmega Wind Complex, expected to become the country’s largest wind farm. This innovative project, with a capacity of 219 MW and an estimated investment of €350 million, will be integrated into the 1,158 MW Tâmega hydroelectric complex. This setup will enable wind energy to pump water to the reservoir, creating a flexible hybrid generation system combining wind and hydropower.

In Italy, Iberdrola has inaugurated a 7 MW photovoltaic plant in Puglia, expected to generate 13 GWh annually—enough to power 5,000 homes. This plant is part of the company’s expansion strategy in Italy, aiming to reach 400 MW of operational renewable capacity by 2026 through merchant and corporate PPA models.

1,000 Solar Communities in Spain

Iberdrola has reached a new record in distributed generation, surpassing 1,000 active solar communities in Spain and benefiting over 30,000 users. These communities allow solar energy to be shared among users within a 2 km radius, promoting democratized access to clean energy and empowering consumers as active participants in the energy transition.

Digitalization and Smart Management: Launch of East-West Digital

During the Qatar Economic Forum 2025, Iberdrola unveiled East-West Digital, a new company dedicated to digital energy management solutions, including platforms for self-consumption, energy efficiency, and smart grids.
Focusing on Europe and the Middle East, this new unit marks a strategic step toward the advanced digitalization of the energy system.

Iberdrola at FES Iberia 2025: A Key Voice in the Energy Debate

Julio Castro, CEO of Iberdrola Spain, will take part in FES Iberia 2025, the leading Ibero-American renewable energy event, to be held in Madrid on June 24. The forum will address major industry challenges such as demand electrification, new market models, grid regulation, renewable hydrogen integration, and battery storage solutions.

In a context of high renewable penetration and stress on existing infrastructure, the event will also examine the blackout phenomenon, diving deep into the current limits of the electrical system and necessary structural solutions: flexible grids, capacity markets, and backup technologies.

Networking and Cooperation: Accelerators of the Transition

With more than 400 executives and participation from leading energy companies across Europe and Latin America, FES Iberia 2025 will once again serve as a key venue for building alliances.

The event will host representatives from top renewable companies such as EDP Renewables, Repsol, RWE, Galp, Jinko Solar, Grenergy, Cox Energy, Zelestra, Schletter, Sonnedix, Elmya, among others.

This major renewable gathering is known for its high-level networking environment, where new projects are launched to reinforce regional cooperation in clean energy.

🎟️ Tickets are already available on the official event website.
