The Italian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (H2IT) presented the “Mappatura dei Progetti Idrogeno PNRR” (Mappature of Hydrogen Projects PNRR), which shows the development status of Hydrogen Valleys, refueling stations, and IPCEI projects throughout Italy.
The map identifies more than 100 initiatives distributed from north to south that constitute the first pieces of a national network for hydrogen deployment:
Hydrogen Valleys: present in almost all regions, with projects in Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Puglia, Sicily, Sardinia, and Campania, among others. These territorial hubs are emerging as centers for the production, distribution, and use of hydrogen, with the participation of energy and technology companies and local authorities.
Refueling stations: a distinction is made between infrastructure for road transport and rail. Several supply projects for light and heavy-duty vehicles are concentrated in regions such as Lombardy, Veneto, and Tuscany, while railway initiatives aimed at decarbonizing non-electrified lines are emerging in Sardinia, Sicily, and Piedmont.
IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest): Italy actively participates in this European program, which brings together major industrial and technological players. Companies such as Snam, Enel Green Power, Edison, and NextChem, among others, are leading large-scale initiatives aimed at developing hydrogen production, storage, and application technologies.
According to H2IT, the integration of these initiatives responds to a national strategy that seeks to connect territories, generate new professional skills, and activate innovative supply chains, accelerating the integration of hydrogen into the Italian energy system.
“The map demonstrates that the projects are not isolated interventions, but rather part of a shared vision that will allow Italy to position itself in the European hydrogen value chain,” the association emphasizes.
