The Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, met on May 13 at MASE with the Greek Deputy Minister of Energy, Nikos Tsafos, before participating in the second Italy-Greece Intergovernmental Summit held at Villa Doria Pamphilj.

“First of all, we agreed,” said Minister Pichetto Fratin, “that energy security is a priority for both governments, not only with regard to external supply, but also with regard to the security of critical infrastructure and the sustainability of supply for businesses and families.”

“Italy and Greece,” added the Minister of the Environment, “consider the energy sector fundamental to economic development and job creation, with particular attention to natural gas, electricity, hydrogen, carbon capture and storage (CCS), connectivity, and renewable sources, while respecting the principle of technological neutrality.”

In all these sectors, there are projects and initiatives that both governments also support at the European level, such as the “Callisto” CO2 storage facility in Ravenna and the “Grita 2” electricity interconnection doubling project, for which the two national operators signed an agreement today.

In this context, the two countries are looking forward to the development of the Regional CCS Plan for the Mediterranean and the strengthening of cooperation on hydrogen, with Italy already launching the Southern Corridor project between North Africa and Europe in recent months.
