IGNIS Energía has been selected by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) and the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) to lead one of the five pilot projects approved within the first regulatory sandbox for the energy sector in Spain. The selected project, I-Flex, represents a key advance in innovation in the electricity system, focusing on the active role of energy demand.
Thanks to the vision and commitment of the IGNIS team, I-Flex will act as a test bed to demonstrate how demand flexibility can benefit all system stakeholders. Its main objectives include reducing the costs of system adjustment services, increasing the reliability of the electricity grid, and improving the integration of renewable energies. All of this has a direct impact on participants’ electricity bills.
I-Flex will also work to eliminate regulatory barriers that currently hinder the participation of demand, storage, and distributed generation in balancing markets. This will foster a more dynamic, competitive, and efficient environment, aligned with the country’s decarbonization and energy transition goals.
The project was officially presented by Santiago Bordiu, CEO of IGNIS Energía, during the conference organized by MITECO on Regulatory Innovation and New Business Models. In his speech, he highlighted I-Flex’s potential to transform the current energy model and generate tangible savings for participating industries.
