Ignis is positioning itself as a key player in the energy transition with its strong commitment to hydrogen and renewable gases. During its participation in the “Storage and Renewable Leadership Forum”, organised by Strategic Energy Corp, Ramón Cidón, the company’s Development Director, confirmed the creation of a platform backed by €200 million, in partnership with KKR, one of the world’s largest investment funds.
“We have set up a platform with KKR to develop several gigawatts of renewable gas projects in Spain,” stated Cidón. According to the executive, this initiative represents a strategic opportunity to ensure Europe’s energy independence, in a context where the continent has historically relied on energy imports.
The first event of the year by Strategic Energy Corp was a two-part virtual session, co-organised with Mobility Portal Europe and Strategic Energy Europe. Strategic Energy Corp partnered with Future Energy Summit (FES) to host this encounter, as FES is the leading platform for renewable energy discussions in Spanish-speaking countries.
Notably, on 24 June, the third edition of FES Iberia 2025 will take place at Colegio Caminos (Auditorio Betancourt, C. de Almagro, 42, Chamberí) in Madrid. (Relive the previous edition here). The encounter will feature companies such as Iberdrola, Nextracker, Engie, Grenergy, Statkraft, Acciona Energía, Red Eléctrica, and EDP Renovables, alongside key representatives from Spain’s regional governments and Latin America. Key discussion topics will include solar and wind energy, energy storage, green hydrogen, distributed generation, PPAs, auctions, and new projects.
Ignis’ Expansion: 500 MW Annually and International Growth
Ignis is not only betting on hydrogen but also pursuing an aggressive growth strategy in the renewable sector. “This year we have managed to connect 500 megawatts, 490 last year. This year, we aim to double our capacity and maintain a target of 500 megawatts annually,” Cidón revealed.
The company has set a goal of reaching 1,500 MW connected by 2028, strengthening its position in the Spanish market and exploring new opportunities across Europe. In this context, Ignis has initiated its first construction project in Italy, one of the most attractive markets due to its high profitability in the renewable sector.
“Italy is an extremely attractive market, with prices almost double those of Spain. This first project, although small compared to our overall portfolio, marks the beginning of our international expansion,” Cidón explained. With 100 MW under development in Italy, Ignis aims to diversify its presence and seize the opportunities the country offers.
Hydrogen and Demand Electrification: Key Factors for the Future
During the event, Cidón stressed that the major challenge in the coming years will be to increase energy demand to capitalise on the growth of renewable energies. According to the executive, Europe has gone through a period of significant renewable infrastructure development, but it is now crucial that energy consumption rises in key industries.
“We have spent the past five years heavily processing renewable projects. Now, the challenge is to increase demand to decarbonise industrial consumption,” he stated. The electrification of industrial processes, the transition from gas to electric boilers, and the rapid growth of data centres are trends that, according to Ignis, will drive this new phase.
Regarding hydrogen, Cidón emphasised that, although it still faces challenges in costs and competitiveness, it will be a cornerstone for Europe’s energy independence. “The technology needs to mature, but it is the continent’s great bet. If we can lower the cost of hydrogen, Europe will be able to reduce its dependency on energy imports,” he said.
Ignis and Its Role in the Energy Transition
Ignis has demonstrated a proactive approach in the renewable sector, combining international expansion, sustained capacity growth, and a strong commitment to technological innovation. The company is not only consolidating its position in the solar and wind energy markets but also exploring opportunities in energy storage and industrial integration.
“Our strategy is clear: to maintain steady growth in Spain, expand across Europe, and invest in technologies that enhance the efficiency of renewable energy use,” Cidón concluded. With the backing of KKR and its €200 million platform, Ignis is emerging as one of the most promising companies in the evolving European energy landscape.
