Iberdrola and Amazon Expand Renewable Energy Deal, Signing 476 MW PPAs in Spain and Portugal

Amazon has already facilitated the generation of over 66,000 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable energy from Iberdrola worldwide under the PPA agreements. In 2024, Iberdrola successfully migrated a wide range of applications to AWS, including its Renewable Operations and Maintenance ecosystem, DOMINA.

Amazon and Iberdrola, one of the world’s largest clean energy companies, have added an additional 476 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy PPAs to their global clean energy agreement, expanding their presence to five countries.

The new power purchase agreements include Amazon’s first PPA in Portugal for 219 MW from the Tâmega Wind Complex, the largest wind farm in Portugal, with construction scheduled to begin in early 2025. The agreement has also been extended to Spain, with two new commercial-scale power purchase contracts totaling 257 MW of solar and wind energy. The three projects will generate 1,093 GWh of carbon-free electricity per year, enough to power approximately 300,000 homes annually.

Iberdrola and Amazon have expanded their strategic agreement, originally signed in 2022 for renewable energy PPAs and cloud services, with the new deal allowing both parties to collaborate on additional projects in existing and new markets. In total, Amazon has already contracted over 66,000 GWh of renewable energy from Iberdrola worldwide during the duration of all signed PPA agreements.

In August 2024, Iberdrola selected AWS as its preferred cloud provider for generative AI workloads as part of their global collaboration. Using AWS’s AI capabilities, Iberdrola’s distribution business is innovating to improve the connection process for new supply points. Iberdrola’s Renewable business is optimizing its wind farm design process, using AWS cloud computing power to simulate wake effects and further improve the layout of wind turbines.

Iberdrola is also using Amazon Web Services (AWS) High-Performance Computing (HPC) to enhance weather forecasting simulations across its 400 wind farms globally. Other planned innovative initiatives for 2025 include creating a Virtual Desktop Platform as a Service on AWS, utilizing services like Amazon WorkSpaces, and deploying an AWS Landing Zone to support the migration of critical workloads to the AWS region in Spain.

In detail, the new PPA agreements include:

  • Amazon has contracted 219 MW from the Tâmega Wind Complex, Portugal’s largest green hybrid project, designed to effectively utilize the already constructed connection point at the Tâmega hydroelectric complex. Iberdrola will invest around €350 million in this 274 MW project, which will supply the equivalent of 128,000 homes annually and create more than 700 jobs during the peak construction period.
  • Amazon will purchase 212 MW from the Ciudad Rodrigo photovoltaic solar plant in Salamanca. The project will produce clean energy to supply the equivalent of 150,000 homes annually. Iberdrola will invest nearly €200 million in the project, which will sustain over 800 jobs during peak construction. As part of the project, Iberdrola has committed to supporting the restoration of the Plaza Amayuelas in collaboration with the City Hall of Ciudad Rodrigo to make it a public space for the community.
  • In addition, Amazon will purchase 45 MW from the Valdemoro wind farm in the Burgos province. The 49.5 MW project, capable of supplying the equivalent of 48,000 homes, consists of eleven wind turbines with a height of 107.5 meters and a rotor diameter of 145 meters. The project will create 145 jobs during peak construction, 40% of which will be from local contractors.

Amazon’s commitment to renewable energy PPAs helps the company match the electricity used in its operations with 100% renewable energy, as part of its goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040. With more than 600 solar and wind projects worldwide, Amazon is the world’s largest corporate buyer of renewable energy (and in Spain), according to Bloomberg NEF, for the fifth consecutive year.

Iberdrola has been recognized as the largest PPA seller in Europe for the second consecutive year, according to the Pexapark Renewables Market Outlook 2025 report.

Aitor Moso Raigoso, Executive Vice President of Iberdrola’s Customer Business, stated:
“With Amazon, we have a partnership that truly aligns with our commitment to developing clean energy and driving the energy transition worldwide. With Iberdrola’s vast global renewable portfolio, we are constantly looking to expand these types of partnerships to accelerate electrification and support companies in achieving their climate goals. Moreover, the AI technology that AWS is helping integrate into our business is already delivering tangible results in terms of making our renewable assets even more efficient and helping the smart grids we operate become more flexible and reliable.”

Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy for EMEA at Amazon, commented:
“Amazon is committed to driving the transition to carbon-free energy, both to advance our goals with the Climate Commitment and to support Europe’s shift to more sustainable energy sources. We are excited to continue supporting Iberdrola in its growth plans, leveraging AWS’s scalability and services in data and AI. We are working with Iberdrola to provide a modern virtual desktop platform for their employees and drive innovation across all business lines to accelerate innovation and delivery, enabling us to meet our goals faster.”
