Grenergy has secured capacity market contracts for five stand-alone battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Poland, following the latest auction organised by Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE), the country’s electricity transmission system operator.
The awarded projects—named Fred, George, Lucius, Hagrid and Harry—represent a combined installed power of 534 MW and total storage capacity of 2.1 GWh. With these results, Grenergy captured more than 11% of the total BESS capacity offered in the auction.
The projects will operate as reserve capacity for the Polish power system during periods when minimum system adequacy is not guaranteed. Capacity services will commence in January 2030 and will be remunerated at a fixed price of PLN 465.02 per kW per year, indexed to inflation, for a 17-year contract term.
Overall, this translates into a minimum guaranteed revenue allocation exceeding €132 million, providing long-term visibility for the assets.
Capacity payments will form part of each project’s revenue stack, alongside revenues from wholesale electricity trading and participation in other regulated markets, such as ancillary services. These additional income streams may be structured through tolling agreements, a common contractual model in the European energy storage market.
Additional EU-backed funding for early projects
In parallel, Grenergy has secured a PLN 34 million (€8 million) grant from the Polish government for four additional stand-alone BESS projects totalling 136 MWh, which are expected to enter operation before 2028.
The funding, announced in 2024, is backed by the EU Modernisation Fund, a programme designed to accelerate the deployment of clean energy technologies in Central and Eastern Europe. In total, 128 projects benefited from the scheme, which has a budget of €1 billion.
Following these awards, Grenergy’s stand-alone storage pipeline in Poland now stands at 5 GWh.
Greenbox expansion across Europe
The Polish capacity contracts provide a further boost to Greenbox, Grenergy’s dedicated stand-alone energy storage platform for Europe, unveiled at its latest Capital Markets Day.
Greenbox currently comprises 31 GWh of stand-alone BESS projects, positioning it among the leading energy storage platforms in Europe. The strategy focuses on core markets where Grenergy already has an established presence:
-
Poland: 5 GWh
-
Romania: 7 GWh
-
Germany: 3 GWh
-
Italy: 5.8 GWh
-
Spain: 6 GWh
-
United Kingdom: 4 GWh
In Spain, the flagship Oviedo stand-alone battery park will mark Greenbox’s entry into the domestic market, with 600 MWh of capacity and a planned commercial start in early 2027.
Including both stand-alone and hybrid storage projects, Grenergy’s total energy storage pipeline now reaches 75 GWh, underlining the company’s growing role in grid-scale energy storage and system flexibility across Europe.
