With LFP batteries, Grenergy will replicate its Chilean model in Spain and lead in Europe

Grenergy is betting on Spain to consolidate its position as a global leader in energy storage, aiming to replicate the success of its Chilean model and supported by a global investment of $2.6 billion for the 2023–2026 period.

The company will present its new strategic plan in May in London, where it will set out its roadmap for the 2025–2027 period.

The company told Strategic Energy Europe: “During this event, we will share the details of the plan which aims to replicate the successful model implemented in Chile with the Oasis de Atacama project.”

This model is based on the hybridisation of solar energy and large-scale storage systems, which has made the Chilean project one of the most significant at the international level.

Grenergy’s goal is to apply this formula in the Spanish market to reinforce the stability of the energy system and move towards a firm and decarbonised supply.

The company is assessing both hybrid and stand-alone formats, depending on the technical and regulatory context of each market. However, they note that in Spain, the hybrid model appears to be gaining prominence due to the growing need for night-time dispatch and grid support.

LFP technology and sustainable vision

Technology selection is also a core part of the company’s strategy. Grenergy highlights its flexible approach but with a clear preference: “We are technology-agnostic and always attentive to innovations and advances in energy storage. Currently, we are backing LFP.”

The company notes that lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries present key advantages for large-scale deployment, both in terms of cost and sustainability.

“These technologies are more developed and offer a more competitive cost, which facilitates their rapid implementation and expansion,” they argue.

They also emphasise that this option minimises waste by reducing the need for frequent replacements, and enables an efficient and safe modular design: “These batteries are integrated into modular systems that include battery racks, battery management systems (BMS), HVAC systems and fire protection systems.”

In this regard, Spain is at an ideal stage to implement these types of solutions, according to Grenergy’s vision: “These technologies allow for rapid implementation and expansion—exactly what Spain needs right now.”

Commercial strategy: PPAs over auctions

Another strategic definition by Grenergy is its decision to prioritise private power purchase agreements (PPAs) over participation in capacity market auctions. They clarify: “We always explore the opportunities within our reach.”

This approach has allowed them to close deals such as the one signed in Chile with EMOAC, which involves supplying over 8 TWh over 15 years, combining solar energy and storage. Spain could be the next setting for this type of hybrid contract, given the maturity of its market and the growing interest in flexible supply models.

Evolution of its corporate message

The corporate slogan “Green must go on” and its evolution to “On and On” encapsulate Grenergy’s ambition to lead the energy transition without interruptions.

The company explains that this message reflects its ability to deliver energy 24/7 and to continue expanding without pause.

“Our goal is to ensure a clean, affordable and steady energy supply, supported by our leadership in energy storage,” they affirm.

With 18 years of experience, the company now aims to scale up and take on a leading role in Europe’s main markets.
