JA Solar, one of the world’s leading photovoltaic manufacturers, announced during the Future Energy Summit (FES) Colombia 2025 that it expects to supply over 60 MW of distributed-generation solar projects in Colombia next year—up from the 36 MW delivered in 2024. The company emphasized that distributed generation has become the most dynamic segment of the Colombian solar market, surpassing large-scale projects that currently face greater regulatory and financial hurdles.

According to JA Solar, the diversification of market players—including new entrants such as Meico Solar—is accelerating growth. “We no longer rely on only three major actors. Our customer base is now broader, and the market is mature enough to expand in new directions,” representatives said during the event.

Colombia’s institutional framework is also supporting this momentum. Government initiatives such as “Colombia Solar” and the national target of 6 GW seek to accelerate the deployment of systems under 20 MW, with a strong focus on residential and industrial self-consumption. JA Solar noted that these conditions allow for faster project execution, fewer regulatory bottlenecks, and closer engagement with end users.

The residential segment, although still emerging, is expected to become the next major growth niche. Local companies are already developing tailored plans to serve this segment, replicating successful models from countries like Brazil. For JA Solar, broader access to distributed renewable energy is becoming an unavoidable direction in Colombia’s energy transition.

The company is reinforcing its presence in the country with cutting-edge PV technologies and integrated logistics solutions. Beyond its widely adopted N-type modules, JA Solar is advancing innovations such as Perovskite and BS Contact technologies, while optimizing import procedures and transport insurance to reduce deployment timelines. “Technology is not limited to products. We also offer agile solutions that accelerate project execution,” the company stressed at FES Colombia 2025.

With a manufacturing plant operating continuously for more than a decade in Guatemala, JA Solar brings extensive experience across Central America and the Caribbean. In Colombia, it has been a strategic supplier for major energy players such as Celsia, Atlas Renewable Energy, EPM, and Promigas, and continues to lead projects that consolidate its role as a key partner in the country’s solar sector.

Technical training is also a cornerstone of JA Solar’s expansion plan. Through partnerships with SENA and leading universities including Universidad de los Andes, the company is training solar installers and operators to support a professionalized and sustainable industry.

During the event, JA Solar also issued a warning: unless project installation accelerates, Colombia could face future energy-supply constraints. While the utility-scale segment remains relevant, the company noted that most of today’s market momentum is driven by distributed generation.

To strengthen cooperation, officials from Colombia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy and the UPME (Mining and Energy Planning Unit) are currently visiting JA Solar’s factories in Asia to better understand the company’s industrial capabilities and potential contributions to the country’s energy-transition goals.
