The CEO of Enagás, Arturo Gonzalo, and the CEO of Gasunie, Willemien Terpstra, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Groningen (Netherlands) for the development of integrated logistics chains between Spain and the Netherlands, aimed at advancing European decarbonization objectives.

The agreement between these two gas operators and renewable hydrogen infrastructure developers in Europe will enable the joint development of the necessary analysis and feasibility studies to promote a logistics chain that allows for the sustainable management of CO2 and the transport of decarbonized molecules such as green hydrogen and green ammonia.

The projects to be developed, subject to regulatory development, include the transport and storage of CO2 from Spain to the Netherlands, including biogenic CO2 resulting from the decomposition, digestion, or combustion of biomass with origin guarantees, which can be used for methanol production and the export of ammonia and other decarbonized molecules through the development of multimolecule terminals. Additionally, the agreement includes the identification of potential offtakers from industrial sectors such as fertilizers and maritime mobility.

The Memorandum of Understanding also includes the definition of a specific action plan for the coming months, with periodic meetings between the parties.

About the companies

Enagás is a European TSO (Transmission System Operator) with 50 years of experience in the development, operation, and maintenance of energy infrastructures. It operates over 12,000 kilometers of gas pipelines, three underground storage facilities, and eight regasification plants.

The company operates in eight countries. In Spain, it is the Technical Manager of the Gas System and, as stipulated in Royal Decree-Law 8/2023, has been designated to operate as the provisional manager of the Hydrogen Backbone Network (HTNO). In line with its commitment to the energy transition, the company has announced its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2040, with a strong focus on decarbonization and the promotion of renewable gases, especially hydrogen.

Gasunie is a European energy infrastructure company. Its high-pressure gas pipeline network is one of the largest in Europe, with more than 17,000 kilometers of gas pipelines in the Netherlands and northern Germany. Gasunie provides natural and green gas transportation services through its subsidiaries, Gasunie Transport Services B.V. (GTS) in the Netherlands and Gasunie Deutschland in Germany.

With its cross-border gas infrastructure and services, Gasunie facilitates the TTF, which has become the main European gas price reference. Gasunie also offers other gas infrastructure services, such as gas storage and LNG. Gasunie aims to accelerate the transition to CO2-neutral energy supply and believes that innovations related to gas, such as renewable gases like hydrogen and green gas, can make a significant contribution. In this regard, both existing and new gas infrastructure play a key role. Gasunie is also actively involved in the development of other energy infrastructures to support the energy transition.
