Diciembre clave para Polonia: Subastas de energías renovables aceleran la transición energética

Poland is preparing for a key month in its transition to renewable energy with a series of auctions scheduled for December 2024, focused on awarding wind and solar energy projects.

With the goal of diversifying and accelerating its energy mix, the Polish government has designed these auctions to promote clean technologies, including onshore wind, solar, and hydro power. A total of 44.588 TWh of renewable energy will be awarded, with an estimated total value of 17.003 billion zlotys.

Auctions focused on wind and solar energy

One of the most relevant auctions will be AZ/6/2024, scheduled for December 16, which will focus on onshore wind and photovoltaic (PV) solar projects of up to 1 MW. This auction will award 11.250 TWh of energy, valued at 3.825 billion zlotys, promoting decentralized clean energy generation in local communities and facilitating access to smaller-scale projects.

The following day, December 17, the AZ/7/2024 Auction will take place, aimed at larger capacity installations, greater than 1 MW, in the same technologies: onshore wind and photovoltaic solar.

This round is the largest in terms of the amount of energy awarded, with 21.750 TWh and a value of 6.525 billion zlotys. These higher-capacity auctions are designed to attract investments in large-scale projects that will significantly contribute to the expansion of renewable energy in Poland.

Hydropower as a renewable complement

In addition to wind and solar energy, the Polish government has included hydropower in its strategy, especially in small and medium-scale installations. The AZ/3/2024 Auction, scheduled for December 11, will focus on hydropower projects of more than 0.5 MW, with a total award of 5.775 TWh and a value of 3.870 billion zlotys.

On the other hand, the AZ/4/2024 and AZ/5/2024 Auctions, scheduled for December 12 and 13, respectively, will focus on small-capacity (≤0.5 MW) and larger-capacity (>1 MW) hydropower projects, with an energy allocation of 0.975 TWh and 2.040 TWh, and values of 508 million and 1.038 billion zlotys.

A crucial step towards a cleaner energy mix

These auctions reflect Poland’s commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable energy transition, diversifying its energy mix through proven and high-performance technologies such as solar and wind energy, as well as strengthening hydropower.

With these initiatives, the country aligns with European climate goals and strengthens its ability to reduce carbon emissions, solidifying the role of renewable energy in its future energy landscape.

Overall, the December auctions will be critical in securing the growth of renewable capacity in Poland, contributing significantly to meeting the country’s climate targets and developing a more resilient and sustainable energy infrastructure.
