Cox, a global water and energy utility that applies technologically innovative solutions for sustainable development, has been awarded five photovoltaic plants with a total capacity of 248 MWp by Lightsource bp in the northern area of Seville, specifically in the towns of Guillena, Burguillos, and Alcalá del Río, as well as an electricity transmission network in the aforementioned locations.
The entire project will create around 350 direct and indirect jobs during the construction period.
The photovoltaic plants will be organized into two different voltage levels: on one side, Gerena 1, Gerena 2, and Gerena 3, connected to a 220 kV voltage, and on the other side, Guillena 1 and Guillena 2, which will inject their production through 400 kV connections.
Regarding the transmission project, it includes the commissioning of the Burguillos 220/33 kV substation, three overhead transmission lines, and two positioning bays.
Thanks to its experience and capabilities, Cox will carry out, through its energy division, the engineering and procurement tasks for the five photovoltaic plants and the transmission project, as well as their operation and maintenance for two years.
The project has been awarded to Cox by Lightsource bp, a global leader in the development, financing, construction, and management of solar energy projects.
The project, expected to come into operation in 2026, will generate 515,000 MWh of clean energy annually, enough to supply approximately 132,000 homes.
This renewable electricity generation will help avoid the emission of nearly 77,000 tons of CO2 each year, equivalent to removing more than 60,000 cars from the roads.
“We are very pleased with this operation, which strengthens our leadership in the energy sector,” says Enrique Riquelme, Executive Chairman of Cox. “We have vast experience and a significant national and international presence in the sector, which, combined with our world-class engineering capabilities, plays a crucial role in strengthening our global leadership position and consolidates us as a strategic partner.”
This award is a demonstration of the trust the market has in Cox and adds to the more than 3.6 GW the company has in operation, construction, and development globally.
It also reinforces Cox’s commitment to the Andalusian community, to which it belongs and wants to continue boosting through local projects and job creation for the region.
Cox’s energy division integrates both generation and transmission, covering all phases of the value chain: from project development to commissioning, being a pioneer and a technologically recognized operator in the industry.
Cox has an extensive track record in the development and operation of renewable energy projects worldwide. The company uses various renewable technologies, including solar PV, BESS storage, combined cycle and ISCC plants, concentrated solar power plants, and bioenergy.
Currently, the company has six generation plants in operation and two transmission line concessions (recently awarded in 2024).
