The Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has published the final resolution for aid under the stand-alone and thermal storage PERTE. This article analyzes the overall results, highlighting the selected projects, the beneficiary companies, the main characteristics of the initiatives, and the challenges involved in their implementation.
The Storage PERTE is structured into two main lines:
- Independent electrical storage (stand-alone): 35 selected projects with a total aid of €150 million, representing a total investment of €788.6 million. The total installed capacity reaches 690.2 MW, with a storage capacity of 2820.01 MWh.
- Thermal storage: 10 projects with aid of €6.478 million, supporting a total investment of €23.8 million.
In total, €156.48 million in aid has been allocated, mobilizing investments of €812.43 million and fostering an accumulated storage capacity of 3411.28 MWh.

Despite the success in the allocation of aid, administrative and logistical challenges persist. As Andrés Pinilla Anton, Head of BESS Sales Iberia at Mars Renewable Iberia, previously highlighted, the concentration of projects in environmentally sensitive areas, such as Asturias, Cantabria, and the Basque Country, could cause delays that jeopardize completion before the second quarter of 2026.
Of the 45 selected projects, 60% are located in the Cantabrian region, including Asturias, Cantabria, and the Basque Country, a key area but with unique challenges.
“These are environmentally sensitive areas, which will pose significant challenges, especially concerning administrative permits,” notes the executive.
Meeting the established deadlines will be crucial for these projects. In an interview with Energía Estratégica España, the analyst highlights that if financial closure is not reached before the second quarter of 2026, many projects may face the return of the aid received.
Delays in permits, such as environmental impact assessments and preliminary administrative permits, are the main obstacles to the successful execution of these initiatives.
“The risk is there, and it is important that we all work together to minimize it,” he concludes, reiterating both the need for coordinated action and the opportunities the program represents.
