JA Solar eyes 680 W modules as Argentina’s solar market matures

The company is consolidating its global positioning while expanding its technology strategy with energy storage and higher-efficiency modules. At the same time, it identifies a more technically mature Argentine market, where dialogue between manufacturers and developers is becoming increasingly specialised.

Argentina’s solar market is showing signs of greater technical maturity, with developers and procurement teams now demonstrating stronger knowledge of photovoltaic technologies and efficiency criteria in project development.

“We see a more sophisticated Argentine market. In fact, technology is advancing much faster than policy,” said Erick Melo, Technical Manager South Latam at JA Solar, during Panel 1 on the second day of FES Argentina.

“Argentina has historically been a very volatile market, and new questions will certainly arise during this period. However, many of these doubts can likely be resolved in the short term,” he added.

At the same time, he highlighted that the shift is also reflected in the profile of technology buyers. Technical and procurement departments are increasingly involved in evaluating solutions, helping to improve the performance of photovoltaic projects.

This greater participation allows companies to optimise technology decisions and ensure more efficient solar PV installations.

Meanwhile, Argentina continues to add new renewable energy capacity, with auctions and contracts reflecting the growing role of solar technology.

In the latest round of the Renewable Energy Term Market (MATER) — Argentina’s private mechanism that allows companies to sign long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with renewable generators — 365 MW of new capacity were awarded.

Solar PV projects represented a significant share of the contracted capacity, together with associated infrastructure works aimed at facilitating their integration into the national power system.

Global expansion

At the global level, JA Solar closed 2025 with more than 14% share of the global photovoltaic market, consolidating its position among the sector’s leading manufacturers.

Locally, the company expects to “be present in the most important utility-scale and C&I projects”.

The company’s activity in Argentina is also reflected in its participation in energy projects linked to the mining sector, such as the supply of photovoltaic modules for an initiative in the province of Catamarca designed to power mining operations.

With 20 years of experience in the solar industry, JA Solar continues to promote modules based on TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) technology, a cell architecture that improves performance under real operating conditions rather than only under laboratory parameters.

In terms of technological evolution, the executive indicated that the industry will likely maintain certain standards, while progress will focus primarily on efficiency improvements.

“We believe that mechanical dimension standards will remain stable, and what we will see are higher efficiencies, with modules exceeding 670–680 W,” Melo explained.

These improvements will be complemented by the growing incorporation of battery energy storage systems, aimed at optimising the management of photovoltaic generation across different types of projects.

Within this context, JA Solar maintains a strategy focused on close technical support for its clients, with the objective of improving project implementation and reducing potential operational challenges.

The company promotes periodic technical training programmes in several regional markets. This initiative is already being implemented in countries such as Chile and Peru and aims to strengthen technological knowledge among industry stakeholders.

According to Melo, this approach makes it possible to anticipate technical challenges and minimise the need for post-installation support, helping to consolidate long-term relationships with developers.

Finally, the executive noted that the company will continue deepening this strategy in the coming years, focusing on specialised technical support and close collaboration in project development.
