IDAE launches €202.5 million in funding for innovative renewables and energy storage: who is eligible?

The call is aimed at emerging technologies such as agrivoltaics, floating solar PV, collective self-consumption and renewable integration in infrastructure projects. It requires the integration of battery storage or hydraulic systems, the use of European-manufactured equipment, and projects that can be implemented before 2030.

The Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE) has officially launched the second call of the Incentive Programme for Innovative Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Projects, with a total budget of €202.5 million.

Funded by the European Union Recovery and Resilience Facility (NextGenerationEU), the measure aims to accelerate the energy transition through emerging technologies and energy storage solutions.

The budget is distributed across five major lines of action. Agrivoltaics will receive the highest level of funding, totalling €75 million, segmented into intercropped systems (€20 million), structures installed above crops (€15 million), and elevated structures (height > 4 metres), which will account for €40 million.

Secondly, collective self-consumption projects involving vulnerable consumers will receive €40.5 million, followed by renewable energy integration in infrastructure projects (with the possibility of including wind, solar or hydropower), allocated €40 million. Renewable heat pumps will receive €30 million, and finally, floating solar PV will be supported with €17 million.

The application period will open on 14 January 2026 at 12:00 and will close on 19 February 2026 at 12:00. Applications must be submitted exclusively through IDAE’s electronic platform, together with the technical, financial and administrative documentation required by the regulatory framework.

In this context, Carmen López Ocón, Director of Renewable Energies and the Electricity Market at IDAE, recently confirmed that the agency will activate a new set of calls focused on energy storage, renewable energy and the industrial value chain in the final phase of Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), which concludes in August 2026.

In addition to the grants already announced, the official revealed that specific funding lines will be launched for pumped-storage hydropower, repowering of wind farms, and hydropower plants with storage, as well as for strengthening the renewable energy value chain, with a focus on domestic manufacturing of equipment and components for clean energy technologies.

Thermal solutions will also be promoted, including district heating and cooling networks and the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable sources, all to be implemented under a demanding and tightly scheduled timeline.

In a context of high global competitiveness in the solar sector, agrivoltaics is positioning itself as a profitable and efficient alternative. It is also worth recalling that IDAE previously awarded €77 million to 62 agrivoltaic projects, which must incorporate sensors, control plots and a five-year technical monitoring system.

In addition, the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture opened a public consultation to include this technology under Article 9 on direct payments of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). However, the main challenge remains its alignment with traditional agricultural support schemes.

Along these lines, IDAE has already advanced other large-scale support mechanisms, such as the allocation of 10 GWh to companies in the sector under the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) programme.

The measure also seeks to strengthen the European renewable energy value chain, and IDAE has indicated that priority will be given to the use of equipment designed and manufactured in the EU, as well as cooperation with research centres and universities.

For agrivoltaic projects, beneficiaries will be required to submit an annual technical report for five years, assessing both the agricultural and energy performance of the installations.

How does the process continue?

The application period will open on 14 January 2026 at 12:00 and will close on 19 February 2026 at 12:00. Applications must be submitted exclusively through IDAE’s electronic platform, together with the technical, financial and administrative documentation required by the regulatory framework.

The grants will be awarded under a competitive bidding process, in the form of non-repayable subsidies, based on technical and strategic evaluation criteria. Eligible beneficiaries include companies, consortia, cooperatives, public administrations and other entities that meet the requirements set out in the regulatory guidelines. Multiple applications per beneficiary will be allowed, provided that the maximum limits per project and per entity are not exceeded.

Selected projects must be implemented no later than 30 June 2030, providing a long-term planning horizon and reinforcing IDAE’s commitment to an innovative, sustainable and decentralised energy model.
