Located in Cancún’s Riviera Maya, Breathless Riviera Cancún Resort & Spa has embarked on a pioneering journey towards sustainability. By implementing a comprehensive energy management strategy, the resort has not only reduced its carbon footprint but has also significantly cut operating costs, setting a new benchmark for green hospitality.
This project reflects the value of strategic collaboration between technology leaders and execution partners. The alliance between Huawei Digital Power Latin America and Enlight has been key to strengthening energy operations in the hospitality sector. Under this joint leadership, Breathless Riviera Cancún Resort & Spa adopted an innovative energy solution based on a smart microgrid integrating solar photovoltaic (PV) generation, a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and on-site renewable generation. The project demonstrates how energy storage is consolidating its role as a strategic tool to optimise operational performance while advancing sustainability objectives.
Success case: Huawei’s first BESS in LATAM hospitality
The resort’s commitment materialised with the inauguration of Huawei’s first 4.5 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) installed at a hotel complex in Mexico. This milestone was recently celebrated during the Latin America C&I Greenovation Summit, where the project was presented as a success case.
Cutting-edge technology:
The 4.5 MWh BESS enables the storage of excess energy generated by the solar panels, ensuring a stable power supply and providing a buffer against demand fluctuations.
Savings and energy management:
This technology allows consumption to be managed at strategic times, generating direct savings on electricity bills for high-demand facilities by reducing dependence on the national grid.
Complementing the BESS, the resort’s solar PV system has a capacity of 624.4 kWp and consists of 1,136 solar panels, generating approximately 960 MWh of clean energy annually. This production is equivalent to the carbon sequestration achieved by planting around 30,000 trees each year, highlighting the significant environmental impact of the microgrid.

The Breathless project is not only a technological advancement but also a business model for the industry. The implementation of microgrids with BESS and solar PV is essential for hotel complexes, which are typically high-demand energy consumers, to:
-
Optimise performance: maximise energy efficiency and drastically reduce operating costs.
-
Secure operations: ensure energy resilience in the event of grid outages or instability.
-
Strategic positioning: strengthen their position in an increasingly demanding energy environment and align with global sustainability goals.
In this sustainable energy transition, Huawei plays a crucial role by providing technical support for the project. The company’s advanced solutions ensure maximum safety, real-time monitoring and efficient energy management. By leveraging Huawei’s expertise in intelligent monitoring and advanced control systems, the resort can optimise energy use, reduce costs and improve operational efficiency.
The commitment of Breathless Riviera Cancún Resort & Spa, supported by Huawei’s technical expertise and Enlight’s leadership, stands as a testament to the hospitality sector’s potential for innovation and environmental responsibility. Showcasing these results allows more hotels to visualise how such solutions can enhance efficiency, secure operations, and strengthen competitiveness across Latin America.
