Iberdrola closed the month of June with a packed agenda of institutional updates and strategic accolades that reaffirm its status as a global leader in the energy sector. Among the key milestones was the appointment of Pedro Azagra as the new CEO of the Iberdrola Group, accompanied by international awards for governance and legal innovation.
Azagra brings more than 25 years of experience at Iberdrola, having led key areas such as corporate development and international expansion. Over the past three years, he served as CEO of Avangrid, the group’s US subsidiary, strengthening his executive profile and ability to manage complex regulatory environments and strategic markets. His appointment signals an orderly executive transition focused on reinforcing the group’s internationalisation and sustainability agenda.
The British publication World Finance named Iberdrola the best-governed company in Spain, highlighting its Governance and Sustainability System, built on ethical principles, transparency and international best practices. This award acknowledges the alignment between the group’s management model and its corporate purpose of generating long-term sustainable value.
In parallel, the Universitat Pompeu Fabra – Barcelona School of Management presented the Business Person of the Year award to Ignacio S. Galán, Iberdrola’s Chairman since 2006. “The true dimension of leadership is to turn business achievements into shared progress, tangible wellbeing, and concrete opportunities for people,” Galán states in the context of the recognition.
The executive has played a key role in transforming Iberdrola into one of the world’s largest utilities, driving electrification, technological innovation and international business growth.
In the legal sphere, Santiago Martínez Garrido, Iberdrola’s General Counsel and Secretary to the Board, was named one of the 20 most innovative general counsels in the world by the Financial Times Innovative Lawyers Awards. This international recognition underscores the group’s commitment to legal modernisation and corporate responsibility.
Lastly, the magazine Estrategias de Inversión awarded Iberdrola the title of best investor relations team in the Ibex 35, validating the performance of a department that, in a company ranked as Europe’s largest utility by market capitalisation, maintains a continuous and strategic dialogue with financial markets.
