With a strong track record in the Spanish market, RWE Renewables Iberia will be present at FES Iberia 2025 with a consolidated roadmap, including investments in onshore wind repowering, new solar projects and an expanded renewable footprint that now exceeds 750 megawatts (MW).
The company is positioned as one of the leading renewable energy developers and operators in the country, with strategically distributed assets and a local team of around 200 professionals involved in all stages of the project cycle: development, construction, operation and maintenance.
Repowering as a driver of efficiency
One of RWE’s most notable projects currently underway is the repowering of the Muel wind farm, located in Zaragoza. The project involves dismantling 27 turbines, each over 25 years old, and replacing them with three modern 6.6 MW turbines, increasing the site’s total installed capacity to 19.8 MW, up from 16.2 MW.
Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2025 and conclude by the end of the same year. The initiative, one of the first of its kind in Aragón, is financed through the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan – NextGenerationEU. A power purchase agreement (PPA) has also been signed with an undisclosed buyer.
The project reflects a wider opportunity: by 2030, it is estimated that 10 GW of Spain’s wind fleet will reach 25 years of age, creating ideal conditions for widespread repowering and significant efficiency gains across the sector.
Diversified and growing project portfolio
RWE’s expansion in Spain is supported by a broad portfolio of operational wind and solar assets, including long-standing and recently launched facilities, as well as long-term energy contracts.
Key onshore wind projects:
-
Aldehuelas (47.2 MW)
-
Juno (49.5 MW)
-
Urano (30.4 MW)
-
Luna (49.5 MW)
-
Lanternoso (24 MW)
-
Plana de Zaragoza (24 MW)
-
Rea Unificado (41 MW with 43.2 MW PPA)
-
Grisel, Siglos, Acampo Armijo, Muel (repowering 2025), among others
Operational solar projects:
-
Andasol 3 (49.9 MW)
-
Casa Valdés (44 MW with PPA)
-
Gazules 1 & 2 (92 MW), entering into operation in 2024
-
Puerta del Sol, Las Vaguadas
Altogether, RWE operates more than 750 MW of installed capacity in Spain, making a significant contribution to the country’s clean energy generation and decarbonisation goals.
European expansion: a broader renewable footprint
Beyond Spain, RWE is actively expanding across key European markets, including Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Poland and Italy. The company currently manages a renewable portfolio exceeding 20 gigawatts (GW) worldwide. Notable assets include offshore wind farms in the North Sea, large-scale solar plants in Italy, and hybrid systems with battery storage in Germany, consolidating RWE’s position as one of the continent’s leading clean energy producers.
FES Iberia 2025: A shared roadmap
RWE’s participation in the FES Iberia 2025 Sustainable Strategy Forum reaffirms its commitment to the energy transition across the region. The event will bring together industry leaders, public institutions and project developers, with a focus on accelerating the Iberian Peninsula’s energy transformation.
Robert Navarro, Managing Director & CFO of RWE Renewables Iberia, will represent the company at the forum, presenting its progress in repowering, the operational strategy in Spain, and RWE’s contribution to national and European energy objectives.
Networks and cooperation: accelerating the transition
With over 400 senior executives and the participation of major energy companies from Europe and Latin America, FES Iberia 2025 is set to remain a key platform for alliance building.
The event will welcome representatives from top-tier renewable players such as EDP Renewables, Repsol, RWE, Galp, Jinko Solar, Grenergy, Cox Energy, Zelestra, Schletter, Sonnedix, and Elmya, among others.
This high-level networking environment is known for launching new partnerships and projects that enhance regional cooperation in the clean energy sector.
