More than 500 MW in hybrid projects advance in environmental evaluation in Spain

Spain is accelerating its energy transition with projects such as Endesa's hybrid wind-solar park in Teruel and the installation of batteries at Iberdrola's solar plant in Cáceres, which combine generation and storage to increase the efficiency and reliability of the grid.

The renewable energy sector continues to gain momentum in Spain, with significant interest in the hybridization of technologies and energy storage systems. In recent weeks, environmental evaluation procedures have been initiated for seven hybrid projects totaling more than 500 MW, according to data from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO). These initiatives aim to combine wind, solar energy production, and battery storage systems (BESS), a growing trend in the Spanish renewable market.

Among the projects under evaluation is the Mudéjar Hybrid Installation, promoted by Enel Green Power España. With 117 MW of installed capacity, this initiative combines the San Jorge wind farm and a BESS storage system in the province of Teruel, Aragón, representing a significant effort to optimize the region’s energy capacity. The project entered the process on September 6, 2024, and is currently in its initial processing phase.

Another important project is the Breña Photovoltaic Park in Albacete, promoted by Acciona Eólica de Castilla-La Mancha. With a capacity of 30.56 MW, the photovoltaic park will be hybridized with the existing 36 MW wind farm at the same location. This hybridization represents a strategic step in strengthening energy generation infrastructure, leveraging the complementarity between wind and solar technologies.

In the same vein, Acciona has also promoted the Cerroblanco Photovoltaic Park in the municipality of Masegoso, Albacete. This project, with 52.778 MW of photovoltaic capacity, will be hybridized with the 48 MW Cerroblanco wind farm. The environmental evaluation process for this project began on October 3, 2024, showing Acciona’s commitment to hybridization as an efficient solution for diversifying and optimizing the energy matrix.

In the province of Cuenca, the Las Lomillas Hybrid Storage project, promoted by Tebar Eólica, SA, foresees a combination of 36 MW of storage with the Las Lomillas photovoltaic plant (39 MW) and the homonymous wind farm (49.5 MW). This project already has an assigned advisor, marking significant progress in the evaluation process.

Meanwhile, in the province of Badajoz, the La Fernandina storage project, with a capacity of 24.04 MW, will be hybridized with an existing photovoltaic plant of nearly 50 MW. This project is a key bet for Extremadura, which is emerging as one of the epicenters of photovoltaic development in the country.

Finally, the BESS Valle Solar Storage project in the Valencian Community, promoted by SPV Genia Davinci S.L., represents one of the most ambitious projects in terms of storage capacity, with a total combined power of 259.456 MW in its BESS I and BESS II installations. This project, hybridized with the Valle Solar photovoltaic installation, is expected to play a crucial role in stabilizing the grid and managing energy surpluses in Valencia.

These projects reflect a strong commitment to hybridization and storage under the framework of the state’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) legislation 21/2013. According to analysts, this trend responds to the growing need to maximize the use of existing renewable infrastructure and optimize the flexibility of the national energy system.

With more than 3.6 GW of hybrid projects in environmental processing throughout Spain, these initiatives add at least 500 MW more to the pursuit of a sustainable and more resilient energy future.
