The Don Jorge photovoltaic power plant, located in Asunción Mita in the department of Jutiapa, has an installed capacity of 5 MW and operates under Guatemala’s Distributed Renewable Generation (DRG) framework. This model has become a key pillar of the country’s sustainable energy transition, leveraging solar PV to strengthen a more balanced and greener national energy mix.

Owned by Corporación de Electricidad Centroamericana (CEC), the project positions the company as a national reference in clean power generation. The plant deploys Huawei Digital Power’s utility-scale Huawei FusionSolar solution, which delivers safe, robust and highly efficient generation through advanced digital technologies.

The facility integrates 9,000 photovoltaic modules using a system-level approach that optimises the balance of system (BOS). Key components include 24 SUN2000-215KTL-H0 inverters, a SmartACU2000D-D-03 intelligent PV string controller, and an STS-6000K-H1 smart transformer station. All equipment is monitored in real time via the native FusionSolar platform, providing full asset visibility and advanced diagnostic tools that enable near-autonomous operation and maintenance.

Since entering operation more than two years ago, Don Jorge has enabled the reduction of 13,000 tonnes of CO₂, contributing to a cleaner energy future for Guatemala and the wider region. From the start of commercial operations, the project has demonstrated that distributed renewable generation is both technically and economically viable, while benefiting from the latest digital and smart energy technologies to ensure continuous and intelligent power production.

“We found a very strong solution with Huawei and Operadores Nacionales (ON), with solid local and regional support. From installation and commissioning through to operation, the team has provided excellent ongoing support,” said Luis Pedro López, Commercial Director at CEC.

Huawei Digital Power and Operadores Nacionales offer customers a fully integrated solution model, supporting each stage of the project lifecycle—from conceptual design to commercial operation. This approach ensures sustained performance, minimises losses and facilitates seamless grid integration. In addition, ON’s Certified Service Partner (CSP) status guarantees high post-sales performance standards, with efficient management and rapid response times.

With more than two years of continuous and proven commercial operation under the DRG framework, the Don Jorge solar power plant sets a new benchmark for technical feasibility and implementation in Guatemala. Designed to embrace the renewable energy transition—particularly solar PV—the project combines high operational reliability with advanced digital technologies, showcasing next-generation innovation in clean power production.
